Heitzenrater, Arlington Victorious at Grand Island! |
GRAND ISLAND, NY - April 17, 2004 --
Mike Heitzenrater, the 2003 Buffalo News Runner of the Year, led all finishers with his excellent 1:12:47 clocking.
Judy Arlington was the top performing female in 1:26:52. Bob Carroll and Brigitte Soltiz were the top
male and female masters. Nearly 400 runners
enjoyed outstanding weather at the 10th annual GBTC Half Marathon on Grand Island.
In the first ever walkers division at the half marathon event, Jamestown's Mel McGinnis cracked the 2 hour barrier to win the walk in 1:55:10. The first womens walker was Sherry Watts of London, Ontario, in 2:26:02. Early in the runner's race it looked as if Canadian Olympic hopeful and defending champion Steve Bohan was heading for a repeat performace. Bohan was cruising sharply at course record pace through the early miles. But Heitzenrater battled back and caught up. Shockingly, Bohan was forced to exit the race by a potential leg injury near the 8-mile point. Fighting a ferocious headwind all alone, Heitzenrater went on to win with a tremendous 6-minute lead over his closest remaining rival, Jeff Gruendike. Gruendike took 2nd in 1:18:49. The GBTC extends a hearty thank you and congratulations to all of today's participants and to all the wonderful volunteers who, working together, made today's event a great success.
