I hate to use that word, but that's the word I will use to describe Galen Rupp's silver medal run in the 10,000 meters at the 2012 Olympic Games. He never relented. When the runners made their various moves, he covered every one of them. Unlike most US runners, he refused to try to run even splits, he was engaged and willing to run 75, 65, 71, 63 etc.
It looked like he was going to finish 4th or 5th down the backstretch, but he summoned his speed and captured only the third medal ever in this event by an American.
He didn't win Gold, but he ran for the gold and he WON the silver medal; this wasn't a guy who settled for silver.
As a runner and more importantly, an American, I was jumping up and down in my living room routing for Rupp to get in that top 3. And, afterwards, I was a bit misty. Most of us have run a 10K, and as distance runners, we watch as our sprinters, high jumpers and long jumpers get Olympic medals and we hope and pray that distance runners will someday ring the bell and get to the podium.
My final collegiate race was the 10,000 on the track. It's a tough race, but a true test of pure distance running. Today, Mr. Rupp passed that test with flying colors.
Well done.

Your description said it all. Rupp's performance must have left us all speechless -- high intensity from wire to wire. I watched it live and concur with the JF observations -- Rupp did not appeaer concerned with pace -- he was in the race and doing whatever was necessary to be in contention. It's a fabulous thing to see an American on the Olympic 10K podium.

My throat hurt from screaming at my TV the entire last 200. I was just incredibly worried the whole race. Then ecstatic.

| Were people as excited to see Manzano take silver in the 1500? |

Yes. Well, not quite as much, since I'm a 10K guy and not a 1500 guy. But it was still amazing. And Centro in fourth. Definitely a great Olympics for the distance team.

That 5,000 men's race was a tire fire. What the hell was that?

Very disappointed in the 5,000-----13:41, come one. Why didn't someone take the lead? I was hoping thathe Canadian kid, Cameron Levins, who ran 27:40 (ran well, too) in the 10,000 would take the lead and see what happens----that's what I would have done. Why not? You going to end up 11th anyway.
Bob Kennedy did that in the 96 5K. He took the lead, ended up 6th, but he gave it shot.
Good win for Farah, but not a good race. Oh, well.
Manzano showed real toughness in the 1500 and the Kudisha's 800 was breathtaking.
