I was rather upset as I listened to WBEN this morning. The morning show hosts were reviewing the Olympic events, The female host was mocking race walking. Unfortunately, this is not a call in show. They were discussing local connections to the sport and mentioned Stan Baron's grandson. You think they would have shown him some respect. We have a proud local connection to this sport in one Mr. Allen James, who represented the USA in two Olympic Games. If anyone has ever tried to 'run' with Allen while he walks, it is a task in itself. I know how hard this gentleman works. His walking translates well to his road racing. Look up some of his 5K road times. That should shut any critic up. I wish there was a way to have these hosts apologize. They owe big time.

Yes.
I heard Schopp and the Bulldog on WGR yesterday, saying basically similar comments about how race-walking, rhythmic gymnastics, etc., should be eliminated from the Olympics. One of them even suggested that there are too many swim events- just swim fast, he said, so why need breaststroke, etc.?
The media is pathetic. I will appreciate every event I watch, and I watch as much Olympics as I can, for the celebration of the spectacularly gifted athletes and their competition. |

Jeanne, Why are you calling for the hosts to apologize? It was just their opinion about race walking. You & I disagree with it for sure, but a person should not have to apologize because they hold a different opinion.

I agree with this completely. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and to voice their opinion whether you agree with it or not. The only time they would need to apologize is if they were insulting an individual for something, not for expressing an opinion on an event. |

You are missing the point. People who are ignorant about something should not mock it until that someone 'walks in his/her shoes'(no pun intended). I have no right to mock 'rhythmic gymnastics' if I am ignorant of it. I can compare it to those who mock others' professions, or think some else's job is so easy. I get this quite a bit in my field. If someone thinks something is so easy, he/she should try it. Otherwise, one has no right to criticize. Knowing Allen and the training regimen he follows gives me a perspective of the event and a valid appreciation. I can't race walk well. That doesn't mean it is ridiculous. I respect what these athletes do.

I am absolutely NOT missing the point. These people have every right to voice their opinion just as you the right to voice yours.
In fact I spent 3 years defending the rights of both of you to voice your opinion.
When you try to force someone to relinquish their free speech by making them apologize when you do not agree with their opinion it is completely wrong and leads us down a path towards countries like China where people are jailed for expressing opinions. You may not agree with them but they absolutely have the right to express their opinion. |

| I think their discussion was more about what they, in their opinions, did not consider a sport or a sport worthy of Olympic competition. They were not so much attacking the discipline, commitment or effort (ie, a person can be world-class at pool) but rather, whether or not it was a sport worthy of the history and tradition of the olympics. I didn't agree with them, but still laughed my butt off listening. You have to remember, these guys have "animal drafts" and "food drafts" and talk about it for weeks. I don't think they get Olympic committee votes on what to keep and what to cut. We REEEEALLY need to consider lightening up.......or just changing the channel. |

Sometimes, there is just no sense in dealing with some people. They just don't get it. It is not about free speech. So, get off the soap box. Anyways, you are a hypocrite. You are trying to tell me I do not have a right to my opinion. Like I just wrote, some people just don't get it I am done!

How about everyone taking a timeout and get a thicker skin...my god, have discussions really come down to this level nowadays?
...and to put any sort of credability into WNY sports radio is just plain silly.

That's the issue I had- it was the news station, not the sports station, and it was during their news show, not an opinion show.
They sounded ignorant.
But then again, maybe they are. |
