What's going on with our training? Where are the quick times? Lots of races, lots of pedestrian times. What gives? When I see 18:25 winning a 5K, I do shake my head......

...JF...I know alot of guys and gals...that have trained their..."a" double "s"...off all winter long to break...25...24...23...22...21... 20...19...18...or whatever...this summer...give us "slow" runners a break if we can sneak in a win at a local 5k...believe me there are still plenty of "fast" runners out there...us "slow" runners just happen to out number you "fast" runners...

A) There are A LOT of local 5ks, no one is going to run one every weekend if they know what is good for their training.
B) There are bigger fish to fry than local 5ks all of the time. Focusing on being in shape for and running fast at bigger races with competition is more appealing to the "local elites". Not everyone is in it to kick around "slow runners" to win some prize money and gift certificates. A lot of these guys run races outside of the area for good reason...
C) Those "slow runners" make up the majority of the population of our sport. Best not to knock on them.
D) I really don't know where you come off questioning training.

STOP BULLYING THE WNY RUNNING COMMUNITY. I myself am trying to break 20 this summer so im not about to gripe about how fast people do or dont run a local 5k in. To you it may be all about the superficial "times" JF but to many of the people who participate in these events its all about the charities, causes, and spirit of the events.
I am so thankful that we have a wonderful running community in Buffalo that is willing to gather together frequently and participate in local 5ks that support well-deserving charities in the area that truly need our help.
What sours the joy of people from all walks of life and ages coming together to do some good in the community is snarky people like JF who tear down entire running communities with blanket statements insinuating that everyone is pathetic and out of shape.
When was the last time you ran a nice fast 13 minute 5k JF? thats right, never. If you want to see "FAST" times then watch the olympics this summer - but please don't criticize local 5k runners, thats just low.
Fast is something thats in the eye of the beholder. Our local elites would get romped by the pros in 5k races obviously but does that make them slow?? I personally view guys who can break 20 as being very fast probably because ive never done it, yet i still have respect for others who havent yet broken 20 because I know how tough running can be for some and I know that everyone is running for different reasons and goals. That is why ill always be there to cheer EVERYONE on as that is the spirit of our sport. In the mean-time JF, please keep your ridiculous statements to yourself so that all of the "slow people" can run in peace...

I agree with what is said above. But on the other hand. If you look at results (especially from the 80s) seems to be more runners in the "Sub-Elite" Category, then now adays....But we now have more finishers and races. I think i read this in a Magazine some where, then i looked at results from Past Turkey Trots..... Not trying to hate just food for thought |

I really don't think it is a fair or accurate statement to say runners were "better" back then. After witnessing recently a 3200m boys HS race that started out in 4:50 and saw 4 boys still break 9:30 and 22/24 break 10 minutes, all of which were from one section of NY, I would say distance running in WNY is alive and well. Heck I coach a team with one boy sub-10, six boys sub-10:20, and nine boys sub-10:45.
I think the bigger question is, "What happens to these runners post, high school and collegiality?" The answer is simple, there are better and more opportunities elsewhere outside of Buffalo, and even the state. That's as far as I will go there...
I think also when you talk about the running community in WNY you need to look outside of Buffalo to the Rochester and Syracuse areas. If you know anything about regional runners there have been plenty in our region who have made it "big" recently. Plenty of native runners are kicking butt nationally, just not all of them live in-state anymore.

Good stuff. A bully? Surely, you joke. I never criticized nor did I call any runner slow. I did not make fun of an 18:25 5K, that may be a super time for that particular runner, a time that right now, I would take personally. But, that said, it is a slow winning time.
I'm just wondering where the faster, more talented runners are hiding out. Where are they? I see fast high school times, fast college times, and then these runners disappear from the scene.
The times are also slower in Rochester and Syracuse, so we can't buy DM's comments that we look eastward for quicker paces.
I do think that serious training has somewhat eroded. I've said it before, many runners today don't run six or seven times per week. They run maybe three times, do some biking, some cross training and then run a race. Overall, they're in great shape, but to run fast, you have to train everyday, or at least 6 times per week.
I'll apologize for calling someone's time pedestrian, but wouldn't you like to see more 15s and 16s at the top of the results?

What? 14 races with the winning times under 17 minutes, 4 of them won in UNDER 16 minutes with 7 total times in the 15:00's. I think for early in the season, these are pretty damn good. I don't think we saw this many sub 16's before June in recent years.

That's a pretty ignorant statement about Rochester and Cuse being slower than Buffalo. I can name quite a few athletes from both areas who qualified for the recent marathon trials, not to mention some quality masters runners and former OT qualifiers. Stotan is based out of Cuse, the 11th place finisher at Boston this year is from Mt Morris, etc. I'd also have to say from experience that the courses in general are much more difficult.
I love the Buffalo running community, I just think you should do a little research before dropping such an arrogant statement.

| Dave, I believe he just meant that Rochester and Syracuse times are slower compared to in the past. Clearly, anyone who knows anything about distance running in this state knows about Stotan Racing based out of Syracuse with C. Fred Joslyn, Nick Stenuf, Maegan Krifchin, Laurel (Leone) and Jared Burdick, Justin Wager, and Mike Heymann as well as Tim from Mt. Morris, Lopez Lomong out of Tully. I just think the argument is weak, like I pointed out, there have been plenty guys running sub 16 already this season and that was in 3 months! |

Lilac is May 20 check the results.... You will be shaking your head for other reasons. Also a little less than 3months away from bergen. last year 18:25 would have got you a 11th place for the women.
