What's going on with our training? Where are the quick times? Lots of races, lots of pedestrian times. What gives? When I see 18:25 winning a 5K, I do shake my head......

Those are some fast times but barely any of those runners are from Buffalo. |

I hope these links work. There was a fast 12k race in NH three weeks ago. The course was rolling hills on a warm morning. I just found the pictures tonight. I met Mike Platt for the first time before the race and little did I know that he would be outsprinting me at the finish. We finished by doing a 3/4 lap around a track. I knew Platt was behind me from his teammates cheering him on but there was nothing I could do as he flew by me. He waited for the final turn to pounce and I felt honored to be brushing elbows with the famous G.O.P.
We finished 75th and 76th. You can see the quality of the field from the other times. This was part of the USATF New England grand prix series which always brings out all the good runners in the region.

I would agree from an earlier post that with there being 4-6 5k's each weekend, you are not going to see someone at each race sub 17:00. I am right around that right now but I do not consider myself fast. I also don't race every weekend as well. My training is set up so I peak at certain times of the year to PR.
Besides, in terms of the 5k.. what do we all consider to be a fast time?
Or, what is the slowest time that should win a 5k? |

Thats not the only reason why it gets a good field. I know races in western and central ny that has more prize money and if you check the results you never know they had prize money.

Where are the fast runners you asked??? Like a bunch of ppl said the fast runners are smart and arent racing every local race, there are to many local little races now, and i think most race directors out there are more concerned on raising or making money for there cause or businness than putting together a good field.

As one of the "old farts" from the 70's, there may have been faster overall winning times due to fewer races. However, I would say that there are vastly more faster runners (men and women) today in their 40's, 50's, and especially 60's and 70's than back then. I would love to see just one "age graded" race in the area....now that would put a whole different light on the "winning" time. |

I think the biggest issue is a dilution of talent via 6+ 5ks each weekend. I don't expect to see 10+ runners at each race running sub 17 when there that many races. A fast runner goes to these races and is alone in front by 30 seconds after the first mile. Why not shut it down and cruise in for the 60 second win (as opposed to the 90 second win)? The big races (w and w/o money) draw fast times that are not that much different from the good old days.
I like this dilution, it means I may have a chance to win a 5k with a pedestrian 18 min run |
