Posted - April 18 2012 : 13:19:53 Great job everyone. And we thought we had it bad last year when the temps were in the 70s at the Buffalo Marathon. You folks are made of the tough stuff. |

Posted - April 18 2012 : 11:48:52 Random thoughts from a guy who whines when the temp is 80 degrees for a 5K....
Unbelievable performance by Scott Simon - it really is hard to fully appreciate it unless you were there.
Thanks to Pat and Julie Occhino for taking both Scott S. and I (and our significant others) under their wings, first suggesting a place to stay, showing us how to get around via public transportation, driving the course and describing what to expect, where to eat, and generally taking any and all logistical pressure off. The really great ones inspire to make those around them better.
The locals lining the course were absolutely fantastic, and I'm sure prevented more medical emergencies by having their hoses out, offering oranges, popsicles, watermelon, ice, etc...and encouragement. I didn't miss a spraying hose, open fire hydrant, or offer to get blasted with super soaker squirt gun. The most memorable spectator to me was a guy close to the top of "heartbreak hill" around mile 20 or so, who could clearly see that my wheels had come off, offering me a glass of coca cola with ice, and saying "this will get you over the top." I had read somewhere that Frank Shorter used to drink flat coca cola during his runs. It was one of the best liquid refreshments that I've ever had in my life, and seemed to instantly revive me...for awhile. Crowds lining the last couple of miles did a great job of getting you in.
Went to Fenway for one of the official post race parties. It was there I got nabbed trying to take the "Mile 22" marker out of the park - it was approx 5' x 5' and bright yellow, so it wasn't like I could stick it under my shirt. Sorry Pat... From there, it was across the street onto the "House of Blues" for the other official post race party. Finally got back to the hotel at 11pm.
Despite my performance, it was unquestionably the best marathon experience I've ever had.
A shout out to Denise K. for her PR at the B.A.A. 5K on Sat. The invitational mile races for the high schoolers and pros were also very cool to watch.

It was never 69 degrees at any point during the race. You must have googled the airport which resides on land in the ocean.
At chest level at the start line at 9:45 it was 84 degrees.
This is weather station data from the ten mile mark:
Time Temp 9:56 AM 75.0 °F 10:56 AM 79.0 °F 11:56 AM 82.9 °F 12:56 PM 87.1 °F 1:56 PM 87.1 °F 2:56 PM 88.0 °F 3:56 PM 90.0 °F 4:56 PM 86.0 °F
